God never gets old.

God still amazes me and I can never get enough of seeing people come to Christ. Tonight in a phone conversation I had the privilege of hearing a single mom of two trust Christ!

She connected with the woman at the well, claiming to look for fulfillment in everything but God. She too had been longing for the Savior to give her the living water.

In her words, "I have tried myself for so long and I am tired of failing, please, Jesus, please, change my life. I believe in you."

No Bowl game can even come close! Father, thank you for letting me be a part!

Firm in Faith: Isaiah speaks with Ahaz

I recently began to read through the book of Isaiah once again. In the seventh chapter of Isaiah the prophet is delivering a message from God to King Ahaz, of Judah. The Assyrians had just overtaken the Philistines and were turning there sights on the areas of Syria, Israel, and Judah. King Rezin of Syria had made a mutual agreement with Israel to ally in opposition to the impending Assyrian attack. The two asked for Ahaz to join them, and upon the refusal declared war together on Judah.

To say the least this left Ahaz and Judah shaking in their boots with nowhere to turn and that is when Isaiah shows up. He tells Ahaz that he is not to align with Syria and Israel because they will be swept away by Assyria. The real threat is Assyria and the Lord will protect Judah if they will trust Him alone. Then the Lord tells Ahaz through Isaiah, "If you are not firm in faith you will not be firm at all." - Isaiah 7:9b

In other words, if you do not believe and trust me then whatever footing you think you have is nothing but a figment of your imagination. If you align with Israel and Syria to avoid war and to fight against Syria, the very people you trust will really be your destruction.

This is a great word for myself! Whatever I trust in more than the provision and care of my Lord is merely a figment of my imagination and can have the same fate as did Israel and Syria in that day. The Lord is unchanging and never failing. My faith must be strong in him in order to be firm at all.

In relation to student ministry, the Lord has reminded me that we are teaching students to become strong in the faith by faithfully proclaiming the love, holiness, and justice of an unchanging and completely trustworthy Lord. Many times students are taught how to fix a faulty faith when in all honesty we are teaching them some aspects of the faith for the first time. It is not that they know and are deliberately disobeying (which is sometimes the case) but more often are simply ignorant of the way the Spirit of God through the Word of God can change their mind and transform their life as they see God with more clarity responding in stronger faith.

May all the students at Richland Creek grow firm in their faith so that they may be firm in the face of adversity and be successful in the face of challenge. May the Lord grant me clarity and knowledge in the way I discern needs and communicate life transforming truth through the power of the Holy Spirit, along with all the teachers in the student ministry.

Good News from Election Day

Many arguments will be given and news correspondents and their guests will debate the issue, but a victory in the liberal California for traditional marriage is not to be missed. Below is an excerpt from an article in the Baptist Press.

Calif. passes Prop 8, a landmark pro-family win; Ariz. & Fla. also adopt marriage amends.
Posted on Nov 5, 2008 | by Michael Foust

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (BP)--California voters Tuesday overruled the state Supreme Court's ruling legalizing "gay marriage," and in the process handed the nationwide pro-family movement one of its most significant victories ever.

With 95 percent of results tabulated, Proposition 8 -- a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman -- led by 52-48 percent and a margin of 400,000 votes out of nearly 10 million cast.

The amendment reverses the high court's landmark May decision and serves as the biggest setback yet for homosexual activists in their goal of legalizing "gay marriage" nationwide.

It is the first time that voters in a state have overturned a court's decision on the issue. The amendment reads, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

"When one looks at the demographics of California, if traditional marriage can win in California, it can win in any of the 50 states when it's put to a vote of the people," Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, told Baptist Press.

The victory was but one of four "gay rights" ballot initiatives where conservatives were victorious. Florida adopted a marriage amendment -- passing it 62-38 percent and surpassing the necessary 60 percent supermajority -- while Arizona passed its own marriage amendment, 56-44 percent, two years after citizens there had become the first state to defeat an amendment.

Three-fifths (30) of the states now have adopted a marriage amendment.

A Good Read on the Election

Albert Mohler's Blog

A vote for suicide or misguided compassion?

In the wake of a historic election most media coverage and talk rightfully surrounds the election of the next President of the United States. But the shift to a Democratic president has, in my opinion, more to say about frustration in the economy and other political issues and less to say about the shift in American culture. But a vote in the state of Washington speaks volumes of our culture change.

On the Fox News Website it states, "In Washington, voters gave solid approval to an initiative modeled after Oregon's "Death with Dignity" law, which allows a terminally ill person to be prescribed lethal medication they can administer to themselves. Since Oregon's law took effect in 1997, more than 340 people -- mostly ailing with cancer -- have used it to end their lives."

It is now legal for persons in Washington to gain access and administer themselves drugs that will kill them. Legal Suicide? This is state number 2 to allow such a law by the people. Make no mistake this is suicide and it is wrong. It is wrong for a person to take a life whether someone else or their own without proper cause. It is only in the hands of a government to properly enact war, justice, and protection and individuals to defend against threats of life and limb. But to grant a doctor the legal right to prescribe drugs for the purpose of ending life without proper cause and individuals the legal access to drugs for the purpose of ending their own lives is scary at best.

I would hope the vote is evidence of a misguided compassion for those suffering from terminal situations rather than a shift in opinion of the cultural definition of life, but I fear that it is not. This is only evidence that our culture is quickly moving towards a prideful worldview where our opinion of who lives or dies exceeds and is not to be submitted to our Creator God. In a way choosing to legalize suicide is another way our culture is saying no to God and His sovereign rule.

We must be a compassionate people but not at the expense of truth and obedience to Jesus Christ the Truth himself.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5

Young George Muller: A reflection on the shaping of young adults by Christ.

I recently began the reading of George Muller of Bristol the classic biography by Arthur T. Pierson. As is usually the case with a great biography, the life account of George Muller is challenging to my own and the things I hold dear, which in effect stand in the way of Christ. But today of particular note was the chapter entitled "New Steps and Stages of Preperation." This chapter is the account of the major events that Christ used to mold young Muller in the faith before setting him in the ministry to which he was called.

The account below is a great reminder to those who work with teens that the turbulent times of young adult life can be used to mold and shape Godly young men and women of the faith when interpreted and guided by the Spirit through prayer and God's word in their lives. As a pastor this only adds to my conviction that our students must become self-feeders on the word of God if they are to become effective as God's people.

This is a brief section account of George Muller's life between conversion and the age of about 25 from Pierson's biography on Muller:

Indeed, as we look back over these four years, they seem crowded with significant and eventful experiences, all of which forecast his future work, though he as yet saw not in them the Lord's sign. His conversion in a primitive assembly of believers where worship and the Word of God were the only attractions was the starting point in a career every step of which seems a stride forward. Think of a young convert with such an ensnaring past to reproach and retard him, within these few years learning such advanced lessons in renunciation: burning his manuscript novel, giving up the girl he loved, turning his back on the seductive prospect of ease and wealth, to accept self-denial for God, cutting loose from dependence on his father and then refusing all stated salary lest his liberty of witness be curtailed, and choosing a simple expository mode of preaching, instead of catering to popular taste! Then mark how he fed on the Word of God; how he cultivated the habits of searching the scriptures and praying in secret; how he threw himself on God, not only for temporal supplies, but for support in bearing all burdens, however great or small; and how thus early he offered himself for the mission field and was impatiently eager to enter it. Then look at the sovereign love of God, imparting to him in so eminent a degree the childlike spirit, teaching him to trust not his own variable moods of feeling, but the changeless Word of promise; teaching him to wait patiently on him for orders, and not to look to human authority or direction; and so singularly releasing him from military service for life, and mysteriously withholding him from the far-off mission field, that he God might train him for his unique mission the race and the ages to come!

In just four short years the life of George Muller was radically altered. As a student pastor there are seven with which I spend with a student in ministry and discipleship. Oh, that God may captivate the hearts of our students with the same passion that gripped the heart of Muller. May God use four years in their lives as students to strengthen their faith through tough choices, circumstances, the word of God and prayer. This is my prayer.

Harvest Festival 2008

Students and adults, we need you for the Harvest Festival! Everything from registration to games need volunteers as we reach out to our community with a fun night of fall activities.

The student ministry is responsible for the games during the Harvest Festival. There will be bounce houses, an inflatable obstacle course, games for older elementary children, and a preschool park. Each of these areas will have activities that require 2-3 students and/or an adult during the evening in two hour shifts.

We will spend time after Overflow October 19th making some preparations for the festival and then set up after lunch on the day of October 26th.Please email me if you are interested in volunteering for the event. There is plenty of room and more fun than you can handle.

See you at Hay Mountain October 26th!

School and the Glory of God

Few things are as disliked by students as getting up every morning to go to, or start school for the day.

Weekly I hear a sigh from many students for a project that is due, a test that is coming up, a homework assignment that is still unfinished, or a book that must be read in spite of no interest at all.

Almost as often I hear from parents who are asking for prayer for their children and school. Frustration mounts on both sides as grades struggle and parents push to have their students be the best they can be.The truth is,there is a small epidemic on our hands within our student ministry as a laxity towards education pervades among many of our students. It is important that this trend change and you, as students, step up to the responsibilities that are put in front of you.

We will study from Luke 2:52 in Overflow on October 12th and 19th. “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” It is biblical for you to grow in wisdom and in stature among men, if done God’s way.

A major part of you growing in wisdom and stature hinges upon your education. You must take seriously learning in order to prepare for the tasks that the Lord has laid before you. In the coming weeks we will look at the examples of scholars of math, science, and more that studied from a Christian worldview making major impacts on their areas of study.

We will also look at growing in wisdom and stature before God and how His glory impacts all actions. This month think honestly about your studies and what your motivation and attitude says about your God to others. Can you say without doubt that the glory of God is shown through how you approach your studies?
If the answer is no then it is time to change for the glory of God.

Disciple Now 2008 - Loved it!

I have had the opportunity to be a part of many disciple now weekends, but honestly I must say that none have compared to the weekend we just concluded at Richland Creek. My prayer is that the student will take the passion that God instilled din there live this week and dive into the scriptures to read and study in order to know God.

Thanks to all the 40+ leaders and adults for their help this weekend and to all 84 students for listening to the voice of God. Let it change you! Be faithful and persistent in what you learned.

Disciple Now Weekend 2008

I am excited about the Disciple Now weekend coming up on October 3-5 for the students at Richland Creek. Our theme this year will be No. 119 as we focus on the Word of God as a vital part of growing as a believer. With (3) General Sessions and (3) Small group sessions, along with an afternoon of recreation, more than 40 volunteers, Josh and Tasha Via leading worship, and 100+ students, this is going to be a great weekend.

The general sessions will focus on three of the Hebrew letter sections from Psalm 119 that teach "Hunger for the Word," "How to Know God through the Word" rather than just knowing about Him, and the affect "Obedience to the Word" has on one's life.

The small group sessions will be practical application to help guide the students in taking God's word into their lives. Direct how-to's on reading, memorizing, meditating, and studying the scriptures will help train our students to be "self-feeders" on the word of God rather than students who have to be fed.

Our hope is that God will renew and revive a passion for His Word among our students. That their lives will be reflective of the truths they take in on a daily basis. May they be committed to knowing God not just knowing about Him.

Thanks to all the volunteers who are sacrificing their weekend in hopes of seeing our students mature in the faith!

Learn from the first, succeed in the second. Thoughts from 1 Samuel 12

Most of what we struggle with today is the effects of yesterday. Poor decisions, lack of integrity, or flat out disobedience to God's Word leads us down paths that produce more heartache than they are worth. Simply put we find ourselves looking for answers to problems that honestly should not have been there in the first place. Yet you are in that problem and you still need an answer.

This sounds a like a group of Israelites who desperately wanted a King because they were scared of some enemies that were bearing down on them with threats. So God heard there request and gave them a king, Saul. After repeated warnings from the prophet Samuel Israel still wanted a human king. So after God supplied, Samuel responds with a warning in 1 Samuel 12:13-17,

And now behold the king whom you have chosen, for whom you have asked; behold, the Lord has set a king over you. 14 If you will fear the Lord and serve him and obey his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God, it will be well. 15 But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then the hand of the Lord will be against you and your king. 16 Now therefore stand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes. 17 Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call upon the Lord, that he may send thunder and rain. And you shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking for yourselves a king.” 18 So Samuel called upon the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.

In asking for a king Israel insisted on making a wrong decision. Yet notice that that Lord gives them a second chance after failing in the first. "If you ... will follow the Lord, (then) it will be well." God takes the new set of circumstances, though they were not ideal and says, start again, at this moment, serving me and it will be well with you.

Notice now the people's response. 1 Samuel 12:19:
And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king.

The people acknowledged that they were wrong. They admitted their failure before the Lord without knowing what would happen next. Now notice Samuel's response in 12:20-24:
And Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty. 22 For the Lord will not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself. 23 Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way. 24 Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.

The Lord simply said, then faithfully serve me now where you are and in what you are doing. He did not ask Israel to remedy the past, they couldn't. They were to just be faithful in the situation they were in and the future would go well with them. However if they decide to follow the same old path of disobedience then verse 25 tells the outcome.
But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king.

Same decisions and actions lead to same results. Learn from former mistakes and choose to be obedient where you are. Succeed in the second chances that God offers. The answer you need is to be obedient to the Word of God this day. And as your pastor let me know how I may pray for you in this time that I may not sin against the Lord by failing to make petitions for His mercy and grace on your behalf just as Samuel.

Kindergarten Prayer

Dear Father,

Today I watched as my first son started the next chapter in his life. I know it is not that big of a step for him since he can't even jump more than three feet yet, but for me I already realize that I am preparing him to be on his own.

Watching as he walked confidently into the classroom while others were crying, taking initiative to introduce himself to others, and respectfully taking his place in his seat, made this Father proud but ever knowledgeable of Your grace afforded to me and my family for a child so precious. May his years of education be sweet, may he grow in understanding, may he make many friends along the way, but of greatest importance my he become a beacon of light for Christ in a fallen world, the greatest of challenges. My hearts desire is captured by John Piper in his prayer for his own sons in Taste and See.

I pray Lord that you will turn his heart towards you, even as he walks with soon to be new friends. Take your Word and sow that seed in open humble soil, send its roots down to the inner heart and make an oak of faith. Oh, Christ take all my sons for your servants, obliterate rebellion from their hearts and grow them into godly manhood, full of love to you and love to men. Let them not love the world, not give a hoot for things or praise. But may Your glory be their passion day and night until the Kingdom comes. Amen

Solomon my son, have a great first day of Kindergarten! You are in His hands and always will be. Live out Proverbs 3:1-12

The Power of the Personal Invitation!

Hamas leader's son, now a Christian, says only Gospel can transform Mideast
Posted on Aug 11, 2008 | by Mark Kelly

LA JOLLA, Calif. (BP)--When a volunteer from the United Kingdom met a young Middle Eastern man in Jerusalem's old city and invited him to a Bible study, he had no idea he was talking to the son of a key figure in the Hamas terrorist organization.

And while the volunteer surely hoped Masab Yousef would hear the Gospel and accept Christ, he had no clue how that invitation -- and Yousef's decision for Christ four years later -- would eventually reverberate throughout the Middle East and perhaps even the world.

A Weekend in Maryland

Memorial Weekend 2008 was both tiring and refreshing at the same time. Myself and an awesome group of parents and students from Richland Creek Community Church tackled 5 roofing projects and some of 1 John.

I am grateful for the work the Lord is doing in and through the students at RCCC and I saw some amazing progress in students this weekend. May He continue to raise up leadership among the students to influence them in passion and commitment to our Lord Jesus Christ.

I am also thankful for the ministry of Zack Furches who just recently came on staff for RCCC student ministries as the High School Ministry Director. His passion for the Word and ability to make decisions with wisdom and grace are a blessing to us all. Thanks Zack for all you do! May God continue to bless our partnership in the gospel!

glocal

Just this last January the students at Richland Creek spent a month training and preparing for outreach through Sunday school. Int eh process they each signed a Glocal Covenant as the committed to not allow anyone in the student ministry to graduate High school without sharing their faith at least one time.

Just 4 months later the work the Lord has done in their lives has been amazing to say the least. I was planning on a year turn around to move these students into an outward focus and begin to think of evangelism as a normal way of life, yet just this Wednesday over 40 students hit the road on a visitation night.

From personal invitations on cold door knocks to servant evangelism projects to guest follow up these students have started on a one way track to understanding what the Great Commission is all about. They are thinking Locally about God's work and missions.

This summer we will be headed to Virginia and Cornall, Ontario for even more missions and evangelism, not to mention that next summer a team of students will be headed across the Atlantic to Greece to work with the Roma Gypsies. Now they are thinking globally.

I am in awe of how fast God has moved these students into action and I pray that hardships, hindrances, unexpected events, and unresponsive visits will not turn the hearts of our students away from a life of making Jesus Christ known.

We will continue to be global and local in the cause of Christ.

Faith Overcomes Fear

Just a couple of weeks ago I shared with the students the story of Jesus calming the storm in Mark 4. The stark contrast between the reaction of the disciples to the storm and the reaction of Jesus is remarkable. The difference, trust. Jesus had an unshakable confidence in God the Father.

It seems that every time I turn around God speaks to my heart saying, just keep on believing. I must say I have an overwhelming passion and burden to see students here at Richland Creek become completely sold out to Jesus Christ. I want to see them take the nonreturnable leap of faith into the eternal work for Christ's Kingdom. Yet we move so slow.

Frustration builds when I look at my weakness as a pastor, my inability to put inside the hearts of our students what a passionate unshakable faith looks like and how they should live it out. Yet God is the heart changer through the power of the Holy Spirit pressing the Word of God upon the hearts of men.

As Jesus told Jairus, the synagogue ruler,"Do not fear, only keep on believing." I will continue to struggle with all His energy as I pray and hope for student after student to catch the Great Commission lifestyle, overcome apathy, and look beyond themselves to a God who desires to captivate their hearts and to the lost all around them.

John 6 tells the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand, in verse 5 the apostle writes, "Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?" He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little." One of the disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?" Jesus said, "Have the people sit down."

What are we for so many in this world who do not know Christ? Where are we to find enough food for these people to eat?

"For [Jesus] himself knew what he would do." - "I am the Bread of Life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger and whoever believes in me shall never thirst."

Do not fear, only believe.

Expelled: a movie that might just be worth watching

In the new documentary, Expelled, coming out in theaters this spring Ben Stein uncovers the cultural bias against intelligent design in academia. From research science at major universities all the way to the elementary school, secular culture is suppressing and doing all within its power to prevent the "second opinion" from entering the classroom.

Why? This film has the potential to answer a few of those questions. I plan to check it out, I hope you do as well. Keep on eye out for it at theater, who knows this might be a movie worth watching.

A Must Read!

If you have not heard of this book, do not worry. I had not until I found myself sitting at the Louisville airport waiting out a three hour delay in my day. Once I had completed all that needed to be done I wondered into the bookstore to buy another book to read.

This time however the book was different. Page after page is filled the recolections of Billy Graham and his relationships to the last 11 Presidents. This is a book filled with insights, God's providence, and great history telling. Trust me it is worth the buy and the read!

The Preacher and the Presidents: Billy Graham in the White House.
